In one sentence
A title tag is the page title in your site's code that search engines show as the clickable headline in results, and it's one of the clearest signals of what a page is about.
How title tags show up in search
The title tag sits in your page's code. Search engines usually show it as the blue headline of your result, and browsers show it in the tab. Google sometimes rewrites it when it thinks another title fits the search better.
The meta description appears under it as the summary.
How to write a title tag for a store page
- Put the most important words first: what the page is.
- Include the detail shoppers search for, like material, size or use.
- Add your brand name at the end if there's room.
- Keep it to about 50 to 60 characters so it isn't cut off.
- Make every important page's title unique.
Example for a product page: "Waxed Canvas Tote Bag, 18 Inch | Your Brand".
Where to edit title tags in your store
Most platforms give each product, collection and page a search preview field. On Shopify it's under "Search engine listing" on each page. If you leave it empty, the platform uses the page name, which is often too short or too generic.
