In one sentence

A SERP, short for search engine results page, is the page Google or another search engine shows after a search, with links, ads, shopping results and often an AI summary competing for the shopper's attention.

What appears on a SERP

  • Paid ads, at the top and bottom
  • Shopping results with product images and prices
  • An AI summary, like Google's AI Overviews, on many searches
  • Featured snippets and "People also ask" boxes
  • Organic results: the regular blue links
  • Images, videos and local results, depending on the search

Why the SERP matters for ecommerce brands

Ranking first in the organic links no longer means being seen first. Ads, shopping results and AI summaries can push the first organic link well down the page.

Look at the actual SERP for your key searches. It shows what Google thinks shoppers want and which spots you can realistically win.

How to win more space on the SERP

  • Write title tags and meta descriptions that match what the shopper searched.
  • Answer the question in a few clear sentences to compete for snippets and AI summaries.
  • Keep your product feed complete so you can appear in shopping results.
  • Add product schema so ratings and prices can show with your listing.
