In one sentence

Conversational search is searching by asking a full question in plain language, like "what's a good espresso machine for a small kitchen?", and getting one written answer back instead of a list of links.

How conversational search works

A shopper types or says a question the way they would ask a friend. The assistant reads the question, works out what the shopper actually needs, and replies with one answer. Often it names products and brands.

The shopper can then follow up: "Which of those is quietest?" The assistant keeps the context, so each question narrows the shortlist further.

Why conversational search matters for ecommerce

Questions carry detail that keywords drop: room size, budget, skill level, who it's for. The assistant uses that detail to match products, so the stores whose pages answer it plainly are the ones that get named.

If your product pages only list specs, the assistant has to guess whether you fit. Guessing rarely ends with your brand in the answer.

  1. Write down the full questions shoppers ask before they buy in your category.
  2. Answer them on your product, category and FAQ pages, in plain sentences.
  3. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity those questions and see who gets named.

Conversational search FAQs

Is conversational search the same as voice search?

Not quite. Voice search is one way to ask. Conversational search is about the shape of the question: a full sentence with context, typed or spoken, answered in writing or out loud.

Do I need different keywords for conversational search?

You need different pages more than different keywords. Cover the questions behind the keywords, with the detail a shopper would add. A shopper question is the unit to plan around.

Does conversational search work for Shopify stores?

Yes. Assistants read any public store page. On Shopify, the fastest wins are product descriptions that answer fit and use questions, and collection pages that compare options.
