In one sentence
An answer engine is a search tool, like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, that replies with one written answer instead of a list of links, so it decides which brands shoppers hear about.
How answer engines find and pick brands
An answer engine takes a question, gathers information, and writes a reply. The information comes from what its large language model (LLM) learned in training, and often from a live web search it runs in the background.
For a shopping question, it reads what reviews, forums and product pages say, then names the brands those sources back most clearly. You don't get ranked. You get named, or you don't.
Answer engines vs. search engines
The line is blurring. Google now puts AI Overviews above its links, and chat assistants now search the web.
Answer engines shoppers use today
- ChatGPT: OpenAI's general-purpose assistant, with web search built in.
- Claude: Anthropic's assistant, with web search built in.
- Gemini: Google's assistant, separate from Google Search.
- Perplexity: built around search, with sources footnoted in every answer.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: AI answers inside Google Search itself.
Why answer engines matter for ecommerce brands
An answer engine does the comparison shopping for the shopper. The brands it names get the consideration. The rest don't make the list, and there's no page two to scroll to. That's the problem answer engine optimization (AEO) solves.
