In one sentence

Schema markup is code added to your pages that labels what's on them, like a product, its price, its reviews or an FAQ, so search engines and AI assistants read your facts without guessing.

How schema markup works on an online store

Schema markup uses a shared vocabulary from schema.org that search engines agreed on. You add it to a page as a small block of code, usually in a format called JSON-LD, which shoppers never see.

The code tells machines exactly what each piece of the page is. "$89" becomes a price in US dollars. "4.7" becomes an average rating from a stated number of reviews. "In stock" becomes availability.

Why schema markup matters for search and AI

In search, schema makes pages eligible for rich results: price, stock and star ratings shown right in the listing.

For AI, it removes guesswork. An assistant reading a page with clean product schema doesn't have to infer your price or availability from the layout, which lowers the chance it gets your facts wrong.

How to add and test schema markup on your store

  1. Check what your theme already outputs. Most ecommerce themes include basic Product schema.
  2. Fill the gaps: brand, GTIN, reviews and availability are often missing or wrong.
  3. Test pages with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.
  4. Make sure the markup matches what shoppers see on the page. Mismatched prices or ratings can get rich results removed.

Schema markup FAQs

Does Shopify add schema markup automatically?

Most Shopify themes add basic Product schema. It often leaves out details like GTIN, brand or review data, so test a product page and add what's missing through your theme or an app.

Does FAQ schema still work?

Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023 to a small set of authoritative sites, so most stores won't see them in search. The markup still labels your questions and answers clearly for any machine that reads the page.

Is schema markup a ranking factor?

Not directly. It doesn't lift rankings by itself, but it makes rich results possible, and those can earn more clicks. For AI, the value is accuracy, not rank.
