In one sentence

Product schema is code on your product pages that spells out name, price, availability and reviews in a format machines can read, so search engines and AI assistants get your facts right.

What product schema includes

Product schema is a type of schema markup from schema.org, usually added to the page as JSON-LD. Shoppers never see it. Machines read it first.

The core fields: name, image, description, brand, SKU or GTIN, and an offer with price, currency and availability. Add ratings and reviews when you have them.

How search engines and AI assistants use product schema

Google uses product schema for rich results: price, stock and star ratings shown right in search. Without it, a crawler has to piece those facts together from your page layout.

AI crawlers read the same code. Schema hands them your price, stock and ratings in a labeled format, so there is less to guess and less to get wrong.

Why product schema matters for ecommerce brands

Your product page is the source of truth about your product. Schema makes that truth machine-readable. It won't earn a recommendation on its own, but missing or wrong schema makes it easier for an engine to show a stale price, skip your ratings, or pick a competitor with cleaner data.

How to add product schema to your store

  1. Check what your theme already outputs. Many ecommerce themes include basic product schema.
  2. Test a product page. Go to Google's Rich Results Test, paste in the URL of one of your product pages, and click Test URL. It lists the product fields it found and flags anything missing or broken. The Schema Markup Validator works the same way and shows every schema type on the page, not just the ones Google uses.
  3. Fill the gaps: GTIN, brand, reviews, shipping and return details.
  4. Keep the schema matching what the page shows. Mismatches can cost you rich results.
  5. Test again after any theme or app change.

Product schema FAQs

Does Shopify add product schema automatically?

Most Shopify themes include basic product schema, but coverage varies by theme. Test a product page to see which fields are there, then add missing ones like GTIN or reviews with an app or a theme edit.

How do I check if my product schema is working?

Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. It shows which fields it found and flags errors. Search Console reports product markup issues across your whole site.

Can product schema get me star ratings in Google?

It makes your page eligible. Google decides whether to show them, and the reviews have to be real and visible on the page. See review signals.

What's the difference between product schema and a product feed?

Schema lives on each product page. A product feed is a file of your whole catalog sent to shopping channels. Use both, and keep them saying the same thing.
