In one sentence

Training data is the text an AI model learned from before it was released, and it shapes what an assistant knows about your brand when it answers without looking anything up on the web.

How training data shapes AI answers

Before a model is released, it reads a very large body of text: public web pages, books, articles and other sources. What it learns becomes its built-in knowledge.

When an assistant answers without searching, it draws only on that knowledge. If your brand was rarely mentioned, or described inconsistently, the model knows little about you.

Why training data matters for ecommerce brands

Many answers mix both: built-in knowledge plus a quick search. The built-in part decides which brands come to mind first. Brands that were discussed often, in reviews, roundups and forums, have a head start.

You can't edit a model's training data. You can make sure the next version reads more, and more accurate, things about you.

How to show up in future training data

  • Keep your brand name, products and facts consistent everywhere they appear.
  • Publish clear, public pages that explain what you sell and who it's for.
  • Earn mentions on review sites, roundups and forums.
  • Don't block reputable AI crawlers you want to learn from your site.

Training data FAQs

Can I find out if my site is in an AI model's training data?

Not directly. AI companies don't publish full lists of what they trained on. Asking the assistant about your brand with web search turned off shows what it learned.

How long until new content shows up in training data?

It depends on when the next model version is trained and released, which can be months. Live web search picks up new pages much faster.

Does blocking AI crawlers remove me from training data?

It can stop future collection by crawlers that respect your robots.txt. It doesn't remove what a model has already learned.
